MHS Employment Services assists job-seeking adults with behavioral health disorders prepare for, locate and retain meaningful work.  We are CARF accredited in Job Development and Employment Supports. Our program is certified by the Department of Rehabilitation in Vocational Assessment. Our services are customized to reflect job readiness, interests, and skills. Our well-trained staff are diverse in culture and language.  Our gender-responsive services are available countywide, near or integrated into a mental health outpatient center and our five locations are close to the major trolley or bus stops. Our program focuses on rehabilitation and recovery and our philosophy is everyone can work.

Program Services

  • Vocational assessment for career planning
  • Employment preparation
  • Job development for placement assistance
  • Job coaching to provide ongoing support and guidance to keep working clients on track

We assist our job seekers with, and learn how to:

  • Complete an employment application
  • Create a resume
  • Gain job search techniques
  • Master job interviews
  • Manage symptoms that may interfere with finding and keeping a job
  • Provide support during the first three months of employment

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a diagnosed psychiatric disability or condition
  • Be a participant of a San Diego County funded mental health program
  • Be, or agree to become, a participant in California State Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) program

Referrals

A job-seeking individual may be self-referred or referred by a mental health provider, family member, or DOR Vocational Counselor.  If MHS Employment Services is contacted directly, an invitation to attend one of our regional Informational Sessions is encouraged.  After attending an Info Session, a referral form is sent to DOR for processing. The potential jobseeker then meets with a DOR Counselor within two-weeks and together they determine what type of employment assistance is needed to meet the individual’s needs.
