Mead Academy History
The Academy, founded in 2005, is named in honor of William R. Mead, Ph.D., a pioneer in the development of community-based mental health services. Dr. Mead recently retired as MHS’ Co-Founder and Clinical Director. Dr. Mead’s integrity, service and dedication to MHS will continue to be reflected in his on-going role as a member of the Board of Directors.
In furthering our commitment to provide the highest quality and standards of education to our staff and our communities, MHS established the William R. Mead-Training Academy (WRM-TA). The mission of the William R. Mead Training Academy is to promote and provide quality education to people working in or entering the fields of alcohol and other drug treatment and integrated services.
The William R. Mead Training Academy provides career training, not formal education, and is not affiliated with any college or university. The units and certificate earned in this program will not be transferable to any college or university in the future. In addition, the certificate you earn from the Mead Academy will not serve as a basis for obtaining a degree at a college or university.* *Exception Springfield College School of Human Services San Diego, California
The Certificate program in Alcohol and Drug Studies consists of 7 courses designed to prepare individuals for entry level into the substance abuse counseling field. Our Alcohol and Drug Studies program meets the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (DADP) requirements for certification in drug and alcohol counseling. Our program follows the Tap 21 Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes of Professional Counselors curriculum.

Students who successfully complete a full AOD program (7 courses) will receive a completion certificate as recognition of educational achievement and may be eligible for and/or may apply for certification in California, depending upon the certifying agency requirements. Students completing the Mead Academy program will be prepared to apply for the Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC) awarded by CAADAC; Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) awarded by CAARR and the Registered Addictions Specialist (RAS) awarded by Breining Institute and other AOD certifications with other certifying agencies.

Financial Aid
The William R. Mead Training Academy does not offer financial aid as we are a low cost vocational school. We do offer flexible payment plans, 10% off non-profit discount for full program enrollment.

- Breining Institute approval for Registered Addiction Specialist (RAS) and the Master-Registered Addiction Specialist (M-RAS) certification

- Certified Recovery Manager (CPR)
- Other courses may apply
Cuurently registered under the BPPE and listed under Department of Consumer Affairs.
In fact, most certifying agencies accept Mead Academy courses toward certification and upgrade to a higher level of certification.
Mead Academy has a transfer agreement with Springfield College in San Diego
