New stepped care option for panic attacks

January 8, 2010 - Faculty and medical students at UC San Diego have recently developed an iPhone/IPod touch app for people who suffer from panic attacks. The tool is designed to guide the user through a panic attack using a combination of mindfulness and relaxation exercises. By offering it as a stepped care option, UC San Diego hopes to interrupt the progression to panic disorder and agoraphobia. The developers are interested in receiving feedback to help guide the evolution of this tool.

State budget cuts force local health service provider to scrap programs

January 7, 2010 – San Diego, Calif. – Ongoing state budget cuts continue to negatively impact health care services in California. The latest round of budget cuts has eliminated additional health-services programs, including a prominent program for incarcerated women who suffer from drug and alcohol abuse. The program, Forever Free, is operated by San Diego-headquartered Mental Health Systems, Inc. (MHS), a non-profit agency founded in 1978 to improve the lives of individuals, families and communities facing substance abuse and behavioral health challenges.

'Sticker shock' events warn against underage drinking

But the Escondido High School junior already knows what many adults ignore: Furnishing alcohol for minors is against the law. "Underage drinking is really dangerous," said Weiss, 15, as she fixed bright yellow-and-red warning stickers on beer cases at Escondido's Northgate Market on Thursday.

SAN MARCOS: Council to consider mandatory training for those who serve, sell alcohol

SAN MARCOS ---- The City Council will be asked to decide Tuesday whether local bartenders, waiters and clerks in convenience, liquor and grocery stores should attend classes on how to be responsible alcoholic beverage servers. The proposed ordinance would make the training mandatory. The city's Student and Neighborhood Relations Commission spent several months drafting the ordinance, and the city held a workshop in January for owners and managers of San Marcos restaurants, bars and stores who wanted to discuss the idea. Most of the people at the workshop expressed support for the ordinance.
