Training Overview

This course will provide an overview of the intersection of developmental disability (DD) and substance abuse (SA).  General concepts and definitions related to substance abuse will be introduced. Central concepts unique to people with developmental disabilities will be explored in depth. Practical strategies and suggestions for intervention will be offered, along with local resources.  This course will be interactive and will include video and case vignettes.

Training Objectives

• Participants will describe substances of abuse, the action, mechanism and effects of specific substances.
• Discuss factors unique to people with developmental disabilities and their resulting vulnerability to SA
• Identify risk and proactive factors relative to developmental disability and substance abuse
• Explore the role of anxiety and depression in SA in this population (ie., "triple diagnosis")
• List factors which contribute to vulnerability of people with developmental disability and discuss how these create challenges in identification, intervention and treatment.             

Target Audience

Direct care staff, administrators, clinicians, counselors and health professionals coordinating oversight or direct application of key treatment strategies for persons dually diagnosed.
