Solutions Building Training 301.3 THE SKILLS APPROACH - THERAPY FOR THE DUALLY SERVED ADULT

The Solutions Building Community Collaborative is now supporting group therapy specifically for individuals with dual diagnosis, using the Skills System approach authored by Julie Brown, LICSW.  This approach is based upon the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and found to be effective for persons with dual diagnosis.  This four hour workshop will provide an in-depth overview of the Skills System; an adaptive coping skills curriculum that helps individuals with learning challenges to improve emotional cognitive, and behavioral regulation skills.  This approach is for people who are dually diagnosed (both with a developmental disability and a mental health diagnosis).  For more information about Julie Brown, LICSW, the author of Skills Systems, please see the website www.behavioraltech.com that highlights DBT including those certified to provide training in this area.  The class will also briefly discuss other therapies and their application for this specialty population.

Objectives

• Describe key components of the Skills System
• Describe Skills Coaching including: How to use and train the Skills Coach technique
• Summarize strategies for Skills System Instruction inlcuding preparing for, structuring and teaching strategies and the 12 week cycle curriculum.
• Discuss benefits of utilizing the Skills Systems.
